Book Review: Dragons & Healers by Nina R. Schluntz

Dragons and Healers

by Nina Schluntz

Dragons and Healers by Ms. Schluntz is a very unique work that has elements of several genres tied into one; it includes action, fantasy, gay romance, and erotica...that alone serves an interesting meal! I was very intrigued by the mixing of these genres, and this book didn't disappoint. It starts off engrossing, and has many unexpected plot twists which alone keep one interested to keep reading. The characters are very well composed, fully textured and complex, which always makes for a great read. While not always likeable, and sometimes even questionable, her characters have quirks and pathologies that make them seem real and relatable, even when they are doing things that don't always make sense, or seem like good decisions. More over, in this bleak, dystopian world she has painted for us, there are dragons that aren't quite dragons (no spoilers--you'll have to read to find out what exactly they are/were) but, when a moment of humanity from a human to one of the dragons occurs, it gives the person a rare, unexpected, special gift that could change everything. The cost for this rare treasure and unique ability is basic; the dragon's life is forever bound to the human, and the dragon is granted immortality. Without spoiling anymore of the story, let's just say that the protagonist, Jonas, is extremely relatable and likable in my opinion. He has real defects like the rest of us, which makes him authentic and well-developed. His fight throughout has you rooting for him, and more of the book and series. He is a very magnetic hero; he drew my sympathy throughout the novel, and had me cheering for him when things seemed positive, but also worrying about him when things looked bleak. Feeling emotions for a character always equates to good writing, so kudos to the author for penning a strong, complete and interesting protagonist. Dragons and Healers is an original tale that you won't soon forget, and we absolutely recommend this read to everyone looking for something different and new in romance, gay romance, action, fantasy and dystopia.

Excellent work!
