Santa Baby by Daryl Jarod:

A Holiday Novella

Starving Artist Magazine sat down with author Daryl Jarod to discuss his debut novella, a lovely little holiday tale that is sure to inspire this season!

Welcome Daryl!

What is the central theme of your novel?

The central theme of this book is that no matter how much pain and heartache someone may have inflected on you, you still possess the power to let go. You can move on and move past it. This is a theme that I have also applied to my life, and I’m sure many readers can relate with.

What inspired you to write about this topic or subject?

This book was initially planned to be a romance erotic short story. But the main character, Joy, began to speak to me more and more as I continued to write. In a lot of ways, I can relate to her and the hurdles she’s endured. As I got into the groove and changed the story’s direction, it also ended up serving as a Christmas gift for my mom. My mother loves to read Christmas-themed books throughout the holiday season so as I wrote this I thought of her and what she’d enjoy.

What was your creative process for writing this work?

I listened to a ton of Christmas music...a ton! Sia’s new album, “Everyday Is Christmas” was played every single day to help get me in the Christmas spirit.

What tips would you give to an aspiring writer?

My ultimate tip for any writer would be to keep writing! Consistency and hard work will pay off, even if it seems doubtful at first.

Do you practice any other forms of art, or creative outlets? If yes, which ones, and why?

Yes! I’m also a singer and actor, which are two other forms of art I’m very passionate about. I’ve been singing since the age of three and acting since I was about eleven. I believe I fell in love with both crafts because they offer me another way to express myself, while also entertaining audiences.

What is your purpose for writing over-all?

Writing is a release. I unwind from a long day and allow my pen to dive into the lives of my characters. It’s a fun outlet. And the feeling of completing a book and releasing it for the world to see is indescribable.

How did you research for this project?

I really did no research for this project. I honestly just allowed my imagination to run wild. The end result was far greater than I imagined it’d be.

What are your goals for this novel, and over-all as an author?

My goal for this novella, along with all my other books, is simply to have at least one person who was thoroughly entertained while reading it. There is a lesson and overall message in Santa Baby, but I didn’t want it to be too preachy. My intent was to make it enjoyable while thought-provoking as well.

What are your favorite books?

A few of my favorites are Trouble Man by Travis Hunter, B-Boy Blues by James Earl Hardy, and The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale.

Who are your favorite authors?

At the top of my list are Eric Jerome Dickey, Zane, Cairo, Carl Webber, and Kimberla Lawson Roby.
